Dharavi one of the largest slum of India, In the heart of Mumbai, is set to undergo massive development led by billionaire Gautam Adani. But this ambitious project is facing significant hurdles even before it can truly begin.
A joint venture led by Gautam Adani is facing obstacles, before starting the redevelopment of Dharavi.
Dharavi is one of the biggest slum in India and Asia located near the Mumbai International Airport.
Dharavi is also known for its “Slumdog Millionaire”, Dharavi is spread over an area of 240 hectares (594 Acres), per capita income of Dharavi is between US$500 and US$2,000 per year according to Wikipedia.
After winning the $619 million bid, Gautam Adani and his joint venture decided to make the slum into a smart city but started facing a problem before they started their work. People and opposition parties are protesting against the group and making some allegations, but the Adani group has denied the allegations.
Here obstacles are:
People living before the year 2000 will get free homes in the redevelopment, at least for 580 acres for now- which will provide housing to the roughly 700,00 people considerably ineligible according to The Economic Times.
To build homes for people in Dharavi local and federal agencies for more land but have yet to secure any, SVR Srinivas, head of the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority.
The project, which began in March with an eligibility survey, aims for completion within seven years.
